Bottoms Up!

Author enjoying a ‘snowshoe’ stroll along the creek

This story started with its title, or more accurately, an observation that led to its title.  The snow filled and chilling past week has kept Michiganders inside, for the most part.  The most outdoor activity I’ve engaged in is bringing more wood into our cabin home to keep us toasty and cozy.  So was I ever surprised when I glanced out between the steep snowbank lined creek to see 5 Mallard duck couples.  And to my delight, it was Valentine’s Day!  Of course, my husband was in the U.P. with Bobcat hunters.  With my Valentine gone, I suppose a gal’s draw towards romance might open her eyes to the romance all around her, including that of the bird family.

Though extremely frigid waters, these ducks didn’t seem to mind as they synchronously dunked their heads into the water in search of nourishment.  Hence, when I saw as many as 5 fannies in the air at the same time, the first phrase that came to mind was “Bottoms up!”  And why not toast these hardy Mallards who brave the elements to fulfill their destination, the continuation of the species.

As thin ice forms along the banks of the creek in random patterns, they weave in and out of what on a grander scale might be described as fiords.  The blue skies above can be deceptive until you experience the wind chill factor.  Yet God in his boundless imagination had a plan from the very start with this little something that brings a smile and feeling of wonder to those blessed to observe this delight, even in the height of a Michigan winter wonderland.  Many complain about this time of year, and I have to admit, I’ve had my moments.  And then I’m suddenly reeled in again as I’m reminded of the beauty God has in store for us with just this small glimpse.

Enjoy this brief counter to what some have referred to as global warming, and the much needed hydration this snow provides.  May you pause to catch the glimpses all around you and remember this… Spring is just around the corner.
